Pisa

30/01/2008 20:37

Once a thriving Roman port, Pisa now likes 10km inland along the Arno.  It was the scene of great battles in the Middle ages, and at the height of it’s power ruled over Sardinia, Corsica, and the Balearic Islands.  Trade with Spain, North Africa and the Lebanon was a rich source of money and ideas.

Pisa is split into two parts by the river Arno.  On the northern side you will find Pisa’s most celebrated attraction, which has become a symbol for all Italy.  The Field of Miracles (Campo dei Miracoli) is an incredible sight and not to be missed.

If you want to go up the Tower, prebook well in advance – only 30 people are allowed up at any one time!  The Cathedral and the Baptistry are also worth a visit. alk away you will find the Botanical Gardens (Orto Botanico di Pisa) – the oldest botanical gardens in Europe, founded in the 1540’s – a tranquil place to relax away from the throngs nearby.

Aside from the Field of Miracles, Pisa is a real contrast to other Tuscan cities like Florence or Siena; buildings along the river are uniform yellow and tan, all the same height, there are no remarkable bridges or picturesque sights – with the exception of Santa Maria della Spina, on the river bank opposite the Palazzo Reale, described as a ‘precious Gothic jewel box’ with its gables and pinnacles, and first class sculptural works.

In the old town, you will find the Borgo Stretto, with its shops and cafes, and daily produce market in the square at the south end, Piazza delle Vettovaglie.

Festivals – like most Tuscan cities, Pisa has a fair share of traditions.

  • Gioco del Ponte – Ponte de Rezzo, last Sunday in June – a tug-of-war dating from 13th Century, on the bridge – music, costumes, processions.
  • Regatta and lights Festival – 16-17 June – a stunning sight along banks of the Arno, with candles and torches on the buildings and boat races in medieval costumes.
  • San Sisto – 6 August – folklore displays
  • Old Maritime Republics Boat Race – competition between Pisa, Venice, Genoa and Amalfi, next hosted by Pisa in 2010

Pisa is a 75 minute drive away from Villa Pallero
